V.A. - Rock Machine I Love You 1968

Sometimes sampler albums really work, and this is a case in point. Columbia was notoriously shaky when it came to these packages, but someone here obviously took some time and came up with something cool. Promoting their hipper titles to the English market, Rock Machine: I Love You really succeeds. They had a hell of a lot of great ammunition, too. With tracks by Simon & Garfunkel("America"), Laura Nyro ("Stoned Soul Picnic"), Big Brother & the Holding Company ("Ball and Chain"), and numerous others, it showed the hip side of a very large conglomerate label, and made listeners feel like they were being properly addressed. There are some interesting curios as well, including Dino Valente's "Time" and John Simon's "My Name Is Jack," which is from the cult doper classic You Are What You Eat. These are difficult titles to find, and if you're specifically looking for them, you'll find a lot more entertainment on this record. AMG.

V.A. - Heads Together - First Round Vertigo Records 1971

Like the liner notes rightly suggest, this is not a label sampler in the usual meaning. No top-selling acts draw the cart, no Black Sabbath, no Uriah Heep, no Colosseum, no Juicy Lucy. Moreover, there are five otherwise unavailable tracks on this sampler, so it seems natural to have a closer look at these. The track by Sunbird sounds vaguely like the old Nirvana, even like Bronco. The Jimmy Campbell track is non-LP and on par with the best of his album and therefore an asset. Folkie Carthy makes an unexpected appearance and this is a classic version of a classic tune, excellent. Pete Aikin plays a self-penned song that sounds traditional too but is quite inspired. Only the Lassoo track sounds like the ''new'' Nirvana and is expendable. From the already issued tracks, the best cut by Tudor Lodge is very welcome too, as this is a much cheaper way to get hold of this marvelous cut than trying to secure their sole and not so very exciting album.

V.A. - Warner Brothers Loss Leaders - Non-Dairy Creamer 1971

A Rare 1LP Loss Leader Anomaly. The arrival of this single LP Loss Leader was a bit unusual, and curious that it rarely showed up in any of the WB’s inner sleeve and brochure advertisements, so it’s been largely forgotten about over the years. Which is a shame, because it’s an excellent off-beat release, and you can enjoy it. Many of the artists here are of the low-profile variety – as Little Feat was still new in 1970 and Peter Green was freshly on his own after leaving Fleetwood Mac. So, the quietly progressive acoustic offerings that dot Non-Dairy Creamer, along with the lack of big star power, lend this album its own subdued vitality and charm. Rosebud is a short-live group featuring Jerry Yester (Modern Folk Quartet, Lovin’ Spoonful) and soon to be ex-wife Judy Henske; Ohio Knox features Peter Gallway, late of the 5th Avenue Band; Zephyr is young Tommy Bolin’s first signed band; Ron Nagle is produced by Jack Nitzsche and Tony Joe White was just on Letterman recently performing with The Foo Fighters.

V.A. - Vertigo Annual (UK) 1970

In those times most record companies made compilations with the groups and singers of their own label in order to make themselves known, thus several compilations gave to the public in general the oportunity to know more groups. This is the prog rock from Vertigo that was linked to Philips / Phonogramm. Don't miss it.

V.A. - You Can All Join In (Islands) 1969

When the Island label sampler You Can All Join In crashed the U.K. Top 20 in June 1969, it represented one of the most unexpected marketing triumphs of the age -- an (admittedly budget-priced) gathering of underground unknowns riding the label's own reputation for keeping its finger on the pulse, and out-performing many of the era's bona fide superstars. Wynder K. Frog, Art, Tramline, Clouds -- these were not names one normally expected to find hogging the number 18 slot on the chart. 
Yet, place familiarity (or the lack thereof) aside, and You Can All Join In is one of those seamless compilations that simply cannot be improved upon. A dozen tracks highlight the best -- and that is the best -- of Island's recent and forthcoming output, from much-anticipated debut albums by Jethro Tull, Free, and Spooky Tooth to the sophomore effort by Fairport Convention. There's also a healthy taste of the label's most-successful-so-far signing, Traffic, as a leaf from Steve Winwood's back pages -- the Spencer Davis Group's "Somebody Helps Me" joins Tramline's cover of "Pearly Queen" and Traffic's own "You Can All Join In" (yes, indeed, this collection's title track). The early '70s were the golden age of British record-label samplers, with Island themselves following through with three, Vertigo weighing in with the legendary Suck It and See, and CBS' redoubtable Fill Your Head With Rock ranking among a myriad others. None, however, echoed either the success or the resonance of You Can All Join In, a status that led, in the early '90s, to a CD reissue for the original compilation. No greater testament to its timelessness could be called for. AMG.

V.A. - Nice Enough To Eat (Islands) 1969

A somewhat incoherent sampler of folk-rock, prog rock, and prog-tinged hard rock, Island's Nice Enough to Eat nonetheless has a stellar artist lineup: Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, Free, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Traffic, Blodwyn Pig, Doctor Strangely Strange, Quintessence, and Mott the Hoople. It's not inconceivable that listeners who enjoy one of those styles will also enjoy the others, so it may be worth picking up if you're looking for any of these tracks in particular. AMG.

V.A. - The Vertigo Annual 1970

A two-LP label sampler from the nascent Vertigo label -- Polygram's answer to EMI's progressive -- psychedelic boutique, Harvest. Overall, for a label sampler, this was a better than average double slab of vinyl, with tried-and-true heavy cuts (from Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Juicy Lucy, May Blitz) jostling for space with lighter stuff (Magna Carta, Dr. Strangely Strange). Rod Stewart turns up as well, with an early solo outing on "Handbags and Gladrags." V.A. - Picnic: A Breath Of Fresh Air 1970

EMI Records launched the Harvest label in 1969 to take advantage of the progressive rock market, and like many record labels at the time, they produced a budget-priced showcase album of their artists. Their roster of artists was large and interesting enough to support a double album retailing at 29s/11d (approximately £1.50). The result was an eclectic mixture of traditional folk, hard rock, psychedelia and obscurities.

The inclusion of Embryo, without the approval of Pink Floyd, and which the band considered unfinished, resulted in the album's prompt withdrawal.^[2] Some editions do not credit the track to Pink Floyd on the inside cover.
