Born in South Carolina but raised in Harlem, Washington was a member of the Hearts in 1956 before tallying her first R&B hit in 1959 with "The Time" for Neptune. Billed occasionally as Jeanette or Justine Washington, she scaled the soul charts into the mid-'70s with hits still hot from the '60s, such as her nugget "Only Those in Love." AMG
